Your Fire TV Stick faces major shake-up tomorrow as popular service will shut down
If you happen to have a Fire TV Stick plugged into your telly, then there’s some bad news this weekend. It’s been confirmed by Amazon that the hugely popular Freevee app is closing its doors tomorrow, August 31. That means, as of Monday, you’ll no longer be able to tune in or watch any content via this application.
Freevee has long been a popular way of watching TV with it offering swathes of shows, movies and live broacasts without requiring any subscription fees. That’s thanks to the platform being fully supported by adverts.
Right now, Freevee features content such as Jury Duty, Alex Rider, Bosch: Legacy and Hell’s Kitchen USA, but that’s about to change.
From next week, Freevee’s huge catalogue of content will switch over to Prime Video instead.
So, those who currently enjoy what Freevee has to offer will need to download Prime Video app instead and log in using their Amazon account.
It’s worth noting that things will still be free. However, Freevee users will also be shown boxsets and movies that will require a Prime subscription or a one-off fee.
This move is possibly aimed at tempting Freevee users into subscribing to Prime Video or splashing out on a movie rental for the night.
“Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and Live TV,” Freevee customers have been told in a pop-up in the Freevee app.
“The Freevee app will be accessible until August 2025. Continue watching your favourite Freevee Originals and our library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed. Download Prime Video to get started and sign in with your Amazon account.”
If you already have a Prime Video account we guess this is good news as it should now be handier to browse all available Amazon content in one app, instead of also having to surf Freevee as you do at the moment.
