WHSmith to close 20 high street stores in weeks – full list | UK | News

One of the branches closing down is in Doncaster, which has been trading in the Frenchgate Shopping Centre for 57 years.

A WHSmith spokesperson previously said: “We can confirm that the WHSmith store in Doncaster will be closing in May.

“It is no longer sustainable to continue to trade from this location, and the decision has been taken to close the store as a result of the forthcoming lease expiry.”

The Doncaster branch is just one of many locations set to close. The retailer has already shut stores in Bournemouth, Luton, and Cambridgeshire, with more closures expected throughout April and May.

The company’s decision to close these stores is part of a wider trend in the industry, as more retailers struggle with rising costs, lower footfall, and increasing competition from online shopping.

WHSmith is not the only major retailer facing difficulties – other brands, including New Look and Select Fashion, have also been forced to close stores in response to challenging trading conditions, The Sun reported.

WHSmith has been exploring its strategic options for its high street estate, with reports suggesting that all 500 of its high street shops could be sold.

HMV owner Doug Putman is one of several interested parties in discussions about a possible takeover.

However, a WHSmith spokesperson said: “There can be no certainty that any agreement will be reached, and further updates will be provided as and when appropriate.”

Despite the closures, WHSmith’s travel division remains strong, with stores in transport hubs performing well.

The retailer has continued to expand its presence in airports and railway stations, capitalising on high passenger footfall and demand for convenience shopping.
