WhatsApp finally adds game-changing feature users have been crying out for

Another day, another WhatsApp update. The UK’s favourite chat app has been on an unprecedented run recently, bringing monthly and sometimes weekly upgrades with new features to both iPhone and Android WhatsApp users.

Today, the firm continues that run, announcing a slew of new features that have started rolling out for free to all WhatsApp users, including a new tool that fixes something about WhatsApp that has irked me for years.

As a phone reviewer I have to switch devices more than most, and have had huge headaches in the past trying to move my WhatsApp chats to a new phone. It’s now much easier if you’re going from an old iPhone to a new iPhone or an old Android to a new Android, but if you want to switch software platforms with your next phone purchase, that usually makes it very hard indeed.

Happily, one of the new features coming to WhatsApp is that the chat transfer tool now supports moving your whole chat history from iOS to Android. This means you can now move your WhatsApp account from iPhone to a new Android phone without using a third-party app.

You can now rely on just the WhatsApp app on each phone to move chats, rather than third-party apps or the new phone’s setup wizard, to keep all your chats. I’ve lost chats and photos trying to move between platforms in the past, so this will be a godsend to me and likely many others.

There are many threads on Reddit of people discussing the pain of moving WhatsApp chats from iPhone to Android.

As well as that, you can now do a bit of WhatsApp spring cleaning to free up some precious storage space on your phone. All those stag do videos were funny and relevant in 2023, but maybe you don’t need them loitering on your phone. Now you can tap Manage Storage within any chat and delete large files from your phone without erasing the group chat or leaving the group – leaving all your chat history.

Another great update is that for the first time, you can now have two WhatsApp accounts running on your iPhone. This feature has been available on Android for some time, but now you can have it on iOS. If you have two numbers on your iPhone thanks to a second running via eSIM, this is a great way to keep work and personal chats entirely separate.

It all runs in the same single WhatsApp app, and you can switch accounts within it.

There is also a new mini update to stickers in the app, if that’s your thing.

“Stickers can bring bigger, bolder expressions to your chats – and now WhatsApp will make it easier to use them by suggesting them as you type emojis,” WhatsApp said in a blog post. “With just a tap, you can swap an emoji for a sticker that captures exactly how you’re feeling.”

WhatsApp said these updates are rolling out now and will be available to all users “soon”.
