Watch moment US military base in Iraq is struck by drone | World | News

This is the moment a US military base in Iraq is struck by a drone. A drone was reportedly launched by an Iranian-backed militia against a military base in the Middle Eastern country. Short-range FPV suicide drones like the one that appears to have struck the US facility are similar to those used by Russia on the frontline in Ukraine.

Other drones of this kind could reportedly be seen circling the compound before smashing into the base. The video was released on Sunday by Iraq’s Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah and shows an attack to the US’s Victory Base near Baghdad International Airport, Al Jazeera reports. It’s believed to be the first time the group has successfully used the FPV attack drone to skirt US defences.

This footage comes after of an attack on the US Embassy in Baghdad yesterday. An Iraqi security source told Al Jazeera on Saturday that the attack destroyed part of its air defence system, without giving further details.

After the attack, the US Embassy said: “Iran-aligned terrorist militias have encouraged and carried out indiscriminate attacks against US citizens and US-associated targets throughout Iraq, including in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

“US citizens should leave Iraq immediately.”

Meanwhile, President Trump claimed he has dismissed a ceasefire request put forward by Iran, ignoring appeals from the United Nations and world leaders to lay down arms.

He said that, despite Iran’s apparent readiness for a ceasefire, he had declined as the deal presented wasn’t appealing enough.

“Iran wants to make a deal, and I don’t want to make it because the terms aren’t good enough yet,” he said in an NBC interview, adding any terms would need to be “very solid” for the US to engage in negotiations.
