Jake Paul celebrated with fiancée Jutta Leerdam in a heartfelt moment after she won the women’s 1000 metres speed skating final. The two-time world champion set a new Olympic record just minutes after it was set with a time of 1:12.31, finishing 0.28 seconds faster than her Dutch teammate, Femke Kok.

Miho Takagi’s previous record fell to Kok in the penultimate heat before Leerdam, 27, went on to break the record once more in the final pair while racing Japan’s reigning champion. Takagi beat Leerdam by 0.64 seconds four years ago in Beijing, but this time the Dutch athlete improved on that silver, while the former record holder took the bronze.

Following the event, Paul took to Instagram to share his pride, writing: “We just witnessed one of the most important sporting moments ever. The doc will tell. Words can’t describe how proud of you I am, Jutta Leerdam.”

Accompanying this heartfelt message is a video of him lifting Leerdam into his arms, followed by a tender kiss between the couple.

This touching scene unfolded away from the track, within the Fiera Milano Rho complex, the venue for the Winter Olympics’ speed skating events.

Moments before, Paul was shedding tears as he watched Leerdam cross the finish line ahead of Takagi. He later shared a photo of her biting the gold medal during a post-race meal.

Reflecting on her victory, Leerdam acknowledged the pressure of competing in the day’s final heat after Kok had already set a new Olympic record. She said: “Everyone saw how hard a position I had in the last pair, after a super good time.

“For everyone, it was surreal. It feels very amazing. Just like a cherry on top of my career, basically. It’s amazing. It’s perfect.”

The newly crowned champion could not hold back her tears, joking afterwards: “My makeup was everywhere. But that’s a good thing, I think.”

Paul also said: “After Femke [Kok] hit the Olympic record, then SHE [Leerdam] breaks the Olympic record. Just the best thing ever.”

Despite losing out on the top spot, Kok was gracious in defeat. She said: “I knew it was a good time, so maybe it was enough for gold. But she was just a little bit faster. I can only respect that.”
