UK’s best glampsite is on quiet island with ‘Caribbean-like beaches’ | Travel News | Travel

A glampsite with sea views and access to an incredible beach has been crowned the UK’s best.

In the UK, it’s easy to associate camping with gale force winds, sheets of rain and regret. It’s a different beast to pitching up on the Continent, where warmer weather and plentiful lakeside spots mean camping is a very popular holiday option in France, Italy and many other European countries. While most of the UK isn’t going to deliver such sunny consistency anytime soon, there is a place that enjoys very un-British-like weather.

Guernsey ranks as the third sunniest place in the British Isles, clocking up 2,117 hours of sunshine in 2022. It is known for its extremely consistent weather in the summer months, when the sun can be counted on to shine most days. And now it can add being home to an award-winning campsite to its list of accolades.

Camp de Rêves Glamping won the best glampsite award in the AA Caravan and Camping Awards, which highlights the UK’s best campsites and caravan parks. AA sent round its inspectors to ensure that only the best of the best, with outstanding overall quality and high levels of customer care, would be crowned.

Camp de Rêves won despite not technically being in the UK. Guernsey is a British dependency island in the English Channel, off the coast of France.

The AA inspectors explained what makes the glampsite so special. “Camp de Rêves overlooks Guernsey’s west coast beaches and beyond. It’s an eco-friendly glamping site with breathtaking sunsets and sea views from each of the eight units available to hire. There are five safari tents and three shepherd’s huts and all are attractively appointed and equipped with all the comforts needed for a stress-free stay. The site also offers a range of facilities ranging from a communal kitchen and pizza hub to children’s facilities with a pirate ship and much more. The Barn can be used as a large meeting space for families or groups. Easy access to the many attractions and beaches the island has to offer.”

The site is highly reviewed by customers, earning five stars out of five on Google Reviews. One recent happy customer wrote: “We had a perfect long weekend staying in Peregrine shepherd hut, one of three on site. The site is beautifully laid out and has a fantastic westerly sea view. Each hut is cleverly situated to ensure privacy, yet is only a short distance from the parking and reception area. The hut is beautifully crafted and fitted out with everything you could need. The bed was comfy and the shower had plenty of hot water. This is a perfect place to get away from everyday life. Thanks so much to the family who have created a wonderful spot for others to enjoy.”

One potential drawback is the price. One night’s stay at the site costs from £190, which is significantly more than a campsite would set you back. Getting to Guernsey from mainland UK isn’t that easy either. Condor Ferries will get you to the island from either Poole in three hours or Portsmouth in ten hours. The company also offers services between St Malo to Guernsey and Jersey to Guernsey.
