When they first set up their own fish and chip shop, the two brothers had the ambition of becoming ‘everyone’s local’, and now they’re recognised far wider than their hometown but as the best in the entire country.
In what they dubbed as the ‘Oscars’ of the seafood industry, this little chip shop in York came out on top at The National Fish & Chip Awards 2026. It was announced that The Scrap Box was the winner of the best fish and chip takeaway in the UK, a title they have not taken lightly.
Those shortlisted for the awards, in order to be taken seriously, must show ‘extensive product knowledge, sustainable business practices, employer integrity, first-rate customer service’ and, of course, a mastered skill in cooking delicious fish and chips.
Although, what can’t be ignored is that both winners, including The Scrap Box, and four out of the six total commended, are based in Yorkshire, which is now without a doubt the home of the traditional UK chippy.

Delighted brothers have won Britain’s best takeaway (Image: The National Fish & Chip Awards / SWNS)
The two brothers who own the takeaway, Aman and Gavin Dhesi, stumbled across the site, which in its past life was once a toilet block by a layby, and had a much broader vision for it. They set out to develop a chippy that would serve all of the villages dotted down and around both York and Pocklington, as well as to those passing through on their trips to the seaside.
The two co-owners of the shop, who also happen to be brothers, are over the moon with their achievement. Gavin shared: “There are so many outstanding fish and chip shops across the UK and countless awards, but this is the one every chippy dreams of, the ‘Oscars’ of our industry!”
“With the most rigorous judging and the highest calibre of past winners, it’s a true honour to be recognised at this level. To represent the very best of fish and chips for the year ahead is both humbling and hugely meaningful to our team and a testament to the craft, care, and consistency we put into every portion of fish and chips.”
The takeaway, sitting at Trunk Road Services on Hull Road in Dunnington, has a commitment to sustainability when it comes to the fish they’re serving. According to their website, the pair made the business Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified back in 2024, meaning they can trace back every piece of cod and haddock they dish up, all the way back to its origins.

The lay-by food spot has garnered over 200 excellent TripAdvisor reviews, with plenty of pleased customers sharing their experience. One recent visitor said: “I’m always wary of places that say ‘award-winning’ and never say what award they won!” But here, the awards are proudly displayed for all to see.
“Attracted by the great exterior mural as we passed by, we promised ourselves to come back later. A lovely, fresh-looking interior, clean. The young chap who served us was extremely pleasant. Top-notch haddock and chips – freshly cooked and not greasy at all. We eat loads of fish and chips and could tell these were excellent.”
Their mural is a standout for drivers passing by, with a vibrant picture of a fish swimming in the water, with the city’s skyline in the background. It certainly draws people into the place, but it’s their tasty food that keeps customers coming back time and time again.
Runners-up in the same category included The Fish Works in Largs, Scotland, which came in second place. Joining them at the top in third place was yet another Yorkshire establishment, Shaw’s Fish & Chips of Dodworth, based in Barnsley.
