UK seaside town so pretty it stars in popular TV show – ‘enchanting’ | Travel News | Travel
When Brits think about the seaside, there’s one part of the country that comes to mind. Cornwall is known for its stunning coastline and scenic views but there’s one town that’s a must-visit this summer.
Porthleven has one of the most impressive harbours in Cornwall – it has been called an “enchanting place” by Cornish Horizons. The area has been there for nearly 200 years and it’s so scenic that even the historical drama series, Poldark, was partly filmed there. It’s often less busy than some of it’s more popular neighbours which makes it an ideal place to beat the crowds.
One place to visit is Porthleven Harbour which is rated as the top thing to do in the area on Tripadvisor.
A person who visited on Tripadvisor said: “This is an excellent relatively unspoilt Cornish village that has become a bit of a foodie hotspot.
“You can walk along both sides of the port which have a mixture of independent shops and restaurants and the traditional pub at the end. Both sides of the harbour are step free so easy access for all.”
If you enjoy exploring independent markets, The Shipyard Market is filled with stalls to browse.
The market is placed in a former industrial building and is sells food, clothes and jewellery among other unique items.
A visitor on Tripadvisor penned: “Very much enjoyed my visit to porthleven and The shipyard Market was full of lovely small businesses.
“A great eclectic mix of amazing wares! Well worth a visit am sure you will come away wanting to return.”
While you’re wandering around, you might see local fishmongers who sell the day’s catch of crab, mackerel and lobster. Trying some locally caught seafood is part of a holiday in Porthleven.
Nearby to the town, you can visit Loe Pool which is Cornwall’s largest natural freshwater lake – it’s separated from the sea by the Loe Bar, a long wide stretch of sand.
Much of the coastline around the town is designated as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty or, is in the stewardship of the National Trust, making it a great base for walks.
For a relaxing and scenic break, Porthleven is a destination worth looking into.
