Donald Trump has shared a video on his social media channels of huge US-Israeli attacks on the Iranian city of Isfahan, with huge explosions and an incredible mushroom cloud filling the night sky. The city in Iran has a population of 2.3 million people and is home to the and home to the Badr military airbase.

Huge explosions and fires lit up the night sky showing a series of blasts, with the video shared in the early hours of Tuesday. Trump did not provide any context to the video, but media reports claim it’s of the US and Israeli joint strikes on a major ammunition depot. A US official quoted by The Wall Street Journal said American forces targeted the complex using 2,000-pound, or around 907kg, bunker-buster bombs. The official said the operation involved a significant number of penetrator munitions. It reportedly targeted a facility storing a large quantity of munitions, including armour-piercing weapons. The attack took place on Monday evening and is believed to be part of a broader campaign targeting Iran’s military capabilities.

Reports suggest the strike caused several major secondary explosions, sending huge fireballs and shockwaves through the surrounding area.

According to Azerbaijani news site, the Caspian Post, the scale of the strikes appear significantly larger than previous incidents, with fires reportedly spreading across areas linked to military facilities.

The US and Israel have repeatedly claimed Iran was close to developing a nuclear weapon, although the UN nuclear watchdog has said it has found no evidence that Tehran is actively building one.

Recent reports however have claimed Iran may have transferred around 540kg of highly enriched uranium to an underground facility within Isfahan.

The city was also targeted during last summer’s Operation Midnight Hammer, when US strikes focused on Iran’s nuclear sites.

The attack has fuelled fears of a further escalation as the conflict entered its second month, despite diplomatic efforts by Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey to calm tensions.

Despite earlier indications that Tehran and Washington may have been moving towards a ceasefire, the latest wave of strikes suggests the conflict is instead intensifying, with Iran’s military and supply infrastructure increasingly coming under attack.

Isfahan has come under attack several times since early March, but earlier strikes were far more limited.

This latest bombardment appears to mark a major escalation, with far greater destruction and damage visible across the city.
