Time lapse show rapid spread of LA wildfire | World | News
Shocking time-lapse footage shows one of Los Angeles’ fires ravaging acres of land in just 90 minutes.
Video from the University of California, San Diego, shows only part of the blaze tearing through the Palisades neighbourhood, driven by 80mph winds and tinder-dry conditions.
Storm chaser and weather expert Colin McCarthy commented on the timelapse video on X: “This is some of the most extreme fire behaviour I’ve ever seen.”
The Palisades Fire is the largest fire burning in the Los Angeles area. A large section of the celebrity-studded neighbourhood is a ghost town of destroyed homes and scorched cars.
Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley said two of the 10 confirmed deaths caused by the fires resulted from the Palisades Fire, which has sent thousands fleeing from their homes.
Two of the dead were amputee Anthony Mitchell, 67, and his son, Justin, who had cerebral palsy. They were waiting for an ambulance to come but didn’t make it to safety when the flames roared through.
Shari Shaw told KTLA she tried to get her brother, Victor Shaw, 66, to evacuate on Tuesday night, but he wanted to stay and fight the fire. Crews found his body with a garden hose in his hand.
Celebrities Paris Hilton, Mandy Moore and Billy Crystal had homes in places devastated by the fires. Hilton, 43, shared a video on Instagram of her burned-down home, telling followers she felt “complete shock” and “truly indescribable heartbreak”.
In an Instagram post, Hilton said: “I’m standing here in what used to be our home, and the heartbreak is truly indescribable.
“When I first saw the news, I was in complete shock – I couldn’t process it. But now, standing here and seeing it with my own eyes, it feels like my heart has shattered into a million pieces.”
US actor Milo Ventimiglia likened watching his Malibu home burning to the fate of his character in the TV drama This Is Us.
In the hit series, his character Jack Pearson suffers from smoke inhalation after his home burns down. Ventimiglia, 47, said: “It’s not lost on me: life imitating art.”
Mandy Moore, who plays his on-screen wife, also lost part of her home in the flames, while Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges confirmed his family home was destroyed in the Pacific Palisades fire.
Actor and director Mel Gibson told NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports that the home he had lived in for over a decade burned while he was appearing on an episode of the Joe Rogan podcast.
Meanwhile, Ventimiglia, whose wife Jarah Mariano is due to give birth, welled up as he returned to see his home had burnt to the ground.
In an interview on US outlet CBS News, he said: “You start thinking about all the memories in different parts of the house and whatnot and then you see your neighbours’ houses and everything kind of around and your heart just breaks.”
US actor Billy Crystal, The Princess Bride star Cary Elwes, talk show host Ricki Lake, The Hills stars Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag and Oscar-winning songwriter Diane Warren also lost their homes in the fires.
Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis and her family pledged $1 million (£812,000) to start a “fund of support” for those affected by the wildfires.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are also understood to have donated supplies to people affected by the weather event. It is understood that the Sussexes also invited friends and loved ones who were forced to evacuate into their Montecito home.
The fires have thrown Hollywood‘s awards season into disarray, with the Critics Choice Awards and the Oscar nominations among events rescheduled as firefighters battle the fierce blazes.
