Travelling in August is often more expensive because it is the peak holiday season and coincides with the school summer break. However, those who want to jet off during that time still have plenty of gorgeous destinations to choose from – ones that won’t break the bank.

According to consumer group Which?, this stunning city located in northern Spain is one of the best destinations for an August holiday because of how cheap it is. Bilbao, an industrial port city, is a vibrant and thriving holiday spot with plenty of things to do around. 

The construction of the Guggenheim Museum in 1997 completely transformed the city. It is one of the largest museums in Spain, and welcomes over one million visitors per year. 

The museum is one of the many remarkable buildings across the city, many of which have been designed by prestigious architects. Bilbao is the perfect blend of avant-garde and traditional, which is why it is such a loved city.

Casco Viejo, the city’s old town, is lined with charming streets and pintxo bars, making it the ultimate spot to enjoy authentic and delicious food.

One visitor, who described the historical centre on TripAdvisor as an “absolute gem” wrote: “The Casco Viejo, Old Town, is a charming area of narrow streets filled with restaurants, shops, cafes, churches and fresh food markets.

“Take the time to wander around and soak up the atmosphere, then sit in an outdoor cafe, eating pintxos and sipping wine. A busy spot, not to be missed.”

Another wrote: “The old streets are beautiful and represent the heart of the city. Everything is pedestrian, rocked by History and very nice historic buildings. A stroll (even better if you don’t have a specific goal) is highly recommended.”

As well as the city being a cultural and culinary gem, it is also green, surrounded by picturesque hills and boasting parks such as Dona Caslida de Itrruizar, known for its landscaped gardens, large pond, fountains, and beautiful sculptures.

If that’s not enough, holidaymakers who enjoy having a beach visit on their itinerary are just 30 minute metro trip away from the gorgeous beaches of Getxo, meaning you can still enjoy a relaxing day of sunbathing.
