The pretty little city that’s a ‘cheaper Prague’ with beer for £1.50 | Travel News | Travel
Europe is full of hidden treasures that offer a perfect antidote to some of the continent’s bigger and overcrowded cities. Taking time to explore places away from the traditional hotspots can be extremely rewarding – culturally and also financially.
The Czech Republic is a popular destination for travellers from all around the world, attracting an incredible 22.8 million tourists last year. The majority of these tend to make a bee line for Prague, the stunning capital full of Gothic and Baroque architectural wonders. However, for those fed up of the crowds and keen to sample something a little bit different, then there is one city that stands out.
Ostrava is the capital of the Moravian-Silesian region and was once the “steel heart” of the country.
After the last coal mine closed some 30 years ago, the city has seen a transformation and emerged as a cultural centre with a vibrant nightlife.
It naturally attracts far fewer tourists than Prague, but is much better value for money.
A pint of beer can cost less than £1.50, while a main course during lunch can be as little as £3.
The city’s powerful reinvention has seen the Dolní Vítkovice complex converted into a vibrant hub for education, culture and social gatherings.
The complex was used to house blast furnaces and was one of the centre’s of the iron and steel production in the region.
Today, visitors can take a walk in the grounds or join a guided tour to learn more about the region’s industrial history, as well as getting a chance to see inside one of the furnaces.
Besides the tours, there’s a Science and Technology Centre, the “Little World of Technology” U6 Museum, and Children’s World, each offering its own unique experience for a separate ticket.
Also, if you’re planning to make a day of it, there are plenty of spots to eat and drink.
Ostrava hosts one of the biggest international music festivals in Central Europe each year.
Held every summer since 2002, the musical jamboree features performers from all major popular music genres.
