The pretty European city that’s 18C in April – ‘remains truly undiscovered’ | Travel News | Travel
Hidden in Italy is a beautiful town that’s often overlooked in favour of the country’s more well-known spots. If you’re looking to enjoy Italy without the crowds, you’ll want to add this pretty destination to your list.
Cagliari is Sardinia’s largest city, with a population of just over 150,000 people, you’ll find the city located on the island’s south coast, with April temperatures of around 18C meaning you’ll be able to soak up the sun while enjoying the stunning scenery. On a travel blog called Grumpy Camel, one person who visited said: “Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, is a really beautiful city – yet compared to many other places in Italy, it remains truly undiscovered. This means that if you ever plan to visit, you will hardly find it crowded with tourists and all those people you will see out and about during the day and crowding the streets and squares of the movida are actually locals.”
While you’re there, you can visit Poetto Beach which is five miles long, and is among the best city beaches on the Mediterranean, according to Tripadvisor.
Seekers of culture will enjoy Cagliari’s old district, Castello, where 13th-century towers still guard the medieval city walls.
Lonely Planet says one of the best things to do is to explore the city’s market.
It says Cagliari’s Mercato Civico di San Benedetto is one of the largest covered markets in Europe, with over 200 stalls piled high with fresh produce and specialty foods from the island.
You can purchase locally made cheeses, fish, or wines to enjoy while on your trip.
One person who visited on Tripavdisor said: “Stalls full of fresh fish, fruit, vegetables and typical Sardinian products. Lively and authentic atmosphere, perfect for immersing yourself in the flavors and colors of local tradition.”
Another must-visit spot is the Palazzo di Città which was Cagliari’s City Hall from the 14th century until 1896, and it now houses an interesting and accessible museum hosting exhibitions of photography, film and graphic art.
To get to the city from the UK, you can fly direct to Cagliari Airport which takes around two hours and 45 minutes from London. In April, there are flights for as little as £30 with Ryanair.
If you’re hoping to book a spring break, Cagliari is a place which can’t be overlooked.
