The majority of British children are now ‘afraid’ for the future of the planet | UK | News
The vast majority of children in Britain are worried about the climate crisis, with 86% now afraid for the future of the planet.
New research found that 94% of kids believe everyone should live as greenly as possible and view smart tech like solar panels, EV chargers, smart thermostats and heat pumps as officially cool.
Kids rate voice-controlled smart lights (43%), robot vacuums (41%), smart fridges (39%) and solar panels (29%) as some of the most desirable things you can have at home, according to research by eco-tech company Hive.
And with 92% of children learning about climate change, many on a regular basis, there is increasing demand for toys that teach them about the environment in a fun, accessible way.
Hive has brought the green home of the future to life through the Hive Playhouse, a miniature home kitted out with dinky versions of the company’s real-world tech.
Features include a tiny heat pump, mini solar panels, a pocket-sized EV charger and a miniature smart thermostat.
Designed to help children see how eco-friendly energy systems work through play, the toy also shows how small changes around the home can help make a difference.
Tom Pakenham, Director of Hive says “Our findings show a clear shift – children aren’t just worried about the climate, they want to help fix it. With parents saying their kids now influence their environmental choices, it’s clear families are ready to embrace greener living.
“The Hive Playhouse brings that future to life in miniature, showing how small changes like smart heating or solar energy can and make sustainability feel achievable.
“We want to help families take charge of their energy, make smarter choices and help parents and children explore eco-living in a fun, accessible way.”
The research also found parents are prioritising the environment with around half planning to invest in more eco products in the next year. Solar panels (35%), smart lighting (34%) and smart thermostats (34%) top their wish lists.
Many have already made the leap; most popular items include smart lighting (36%), smart thermostats (35%) and solar panels (34%). The investment also has financial benefits with 35% of families reporting saving £101-£500 a year thanks to smart tech.
