Norway is set to be home to a brand new multi-million pound airport that will transform one of its towns.

In 2029 Norway is expected to open the new Bodo Airport which will replace the existing one as the town’s main flying hub once it opens to travellers.

The reason behind the build is to free up an area of land closer to the town centre for a new urban development. Instead, the airport will be located around 900m south of the Bodo Airport’s current site.

Avinor, Norwary’s state-owned airport operator, are behind the development of the new airport which is reported to cost a whopping £564 million.

Abraham Foss, Avinor’s chief executive, said: “At Avinor, we’re highly motivated to work together with our partners at the municipality of Bodo and in the Norwegian Armed Forces to build an airport that will become a hub for traffic into and out of the region.

“We’ve seen great enthusiasm throughout the city and among our employees.”

According to a report by Global Construction Review, work for huge airport began last year. It will feature 25,000 square metres of terminal and operational buildings and will be able to handle up to 2.3 million passengers per year.

While the new airport is being built, a spokesperson for Anvior said: “The current airport will remain operational until the day before the new airport opens for operations.”

This year, the seaside town saw a record-breaking number of over one million international visitors, which could be thanks to the city being named the European Capital of Culture for 2024.

The town hosted a “Midsummer Madness” during the summer, which features a number of parties, concerts and outdoor games. The event was some of the 1,000 hosted throughout the year, described as “the largest cultural happening in Norway in over a decade.”

Bodo also boasts incredible beaches, including one that has been labelled as the city’s answer to popular holiday destination Bora Bora.

Norwegian Air said: “Bodo’s answer to Bora Bora is the hidden paradise beach of Hovdsundet.

“The water comes in from both sides of the beach, and the white sand is a mega Instagram favourite.”
