The Greek island just as beautiful as Santorini but without the crowds | World | News

This island has long remained in the shadow of its sibling Cycladic islands like Santorini, Mykonos, or Paros, but it’s no less beautiful in the least. If you’re looking for a more tranquil, ‘authentically Greek experience’, away from the tourist traps or crowded cobbled streets, this small island in the Aegean Sea is just the one for you. Halfway between Milos and the iconic Santorini, Folegandros is a peaceful hidden gem filled with breathtaking scenery, stone-paved streets, and incredible food away from the crowds of tourists that swarm the other more popular islands during peak season.

Even though it is less popular, it is filled with the charm, character and beauty of the Cyclades with its iconic white buildings and the stunning Panagia church at the top of the island, offering exceptional panoramic views of the sea and the island. Its unspoiled natural beauty and crystal-clear waters, added to the relaxed atmosphere, more authentic feel, and traditional eateries offering delicious dishes, make it an island that must not be overlooked.

Lose yourself in the stunning cobbled streets of the Chora viillage where you’ll see the iconic white-coloured buildings with bougainvillea, colourful squares where you’ll hear people chatting away and laughing while enjoying a delicious meal or a drink.

Make sure you walk through the stunning streets of Kastro, a historic area dating back to the Middle Ages that’s so picturesque, it feels like something out of a dream.

The most popular beach on the island is Katergos, which is unspoiled, surrounded by majestic cliffs, and has the cleanest, most crystal-clear waters. It can be accessed either by boat or by foot.

Other beaches on the island, which all have turquoise-coloured waters, include Agios Nikolaos beach, Agali beach, Livadaki beach, Fira beach, and Karavostasi beach.

Visit Ano Meria, a small traditional village, offering a completely different atmosphere from any other Cycladic village you’ve ever experienced. It feels as though time has stood still, with the locals’ rural lifestyle transporting you back several decades and with a community that is fully self-sufficient, with stunning lemon groves, a wine press, and even an olive press.

Amy Yasmin posted a Tiktok video describing the island as the ‘secret Greek island no one talks about’. She wrote: “Despite only being a short ferry ride away from Santorini, the island has managed to preserve its local charm and pristine landscapes. Expect postcard-perfect views without the crowds.”

She said in the video: “This is Folegandros, hidden next to the popular Santorini. Folegandros is a Greek island that few have heard of, largely untouched by international tourists.

“The island is packed with that Cyclades charm without the crowds, but its beautiful, sleepy disposition makes it one of the best Greek islands to visit, especially for those seeking a peaceful escape.”

Another TikToker called Gabriella said in a video: “I was blown away from the moment I stepped foot on the island. She added: “I will 150% be coming back next year.”
