The Christmas market in beautiful little town that’s 1 of UK’s best fo | UK | Travel
Nestled in the heart of the South Downs, Petworth not only makes for a relaxing country weekend but also hides a stunning treasure trove of unique gifts from handcrafted Gnomes to bamboo muslin bedding for babies.
The picturesque market town, with its quaint cobbled streets, also conceals an impressive art collection, a 700-acre deer park, and numerous antique shops and galleries.
At its heart stands the prominent 17th-century Grade 1 listed country house, which is now opening its doors for a spectacular two-day Christmas Market.
Built in 1688 by the 6th Duke of Somerset, it’s normally, a place to spot Van Dyck’s and Turner’s, but the house is now preparing to host a “Christmas Enchantment.”
Taking place in The Battery House & Servants’ Quarters, and featuring the handmade wares of over 40 makers, there’ll be reusable fabric crackers, gorgeous floral print enamelware, luxury candles, handcrafted confectionery, florally collaged lampshades, cushions, gloves, and reclaimed wooden boards painted with British sea and wildlife motifs.
Visitors are invited to “step into a Christmas Enchantment – a midwinter journey through Petworth House. Inspired by the Winter Solstice and the shifting rhythms of nature, the grand state rooms transform into a dreamlike world of overgrown wonder”.
As well as the Christmas Makers’ Market, there’ll be late openings, traditional wreath-making workshops, and festive block printing.
The market will be open on Saturday, November 29 (10am to 6.30pm) and Sunday, November 30 (10am to 4pm).
The hosts add that Saturday’s late opening will be ”a chance to enjoy the house’s winter transformation in a new light.”
“You can experience the festive atmosphere of Petworth House after dark, with sparkling lights and a courtyard choir making the turn of the season”
There’ll also be a choir performing at 5.30pm.
Both Petworth House and Park car parks are located on the A283. From the A272 drive north away from the centre of Petworth town and follow the signs for ‘Petworth House’ or ‘Petworth Park’. By train, there are services which run from London Bridge, which can take you to the closest train station, Pulborough.
The Christmas Enchantment runs from November 29 to January 4 and will be closed on December 24 and 25.
