The beautiful seaside town with Cornwall’s ‘best fish and chips’ | UK | Travel


Staycations have become all the rage in recent years, and one town in Cornwall has announced itself as the perfect place for a week away. While you may miss out on an Italian bowl of pasta or some Spanish paella, it does have some of the best Fish and Chips anywhere in the world.

Truro is Cornwall’s only city and sits on the river it shares a name with; it blends its beautiful Gothic cathedral  with all the charm of a market town and is no seaside resort like many of its neighbours. Just a stone’s throw away from the coast itself, the city is surrounded by some of the nation’s best beaches that feel like you could have been transported to the Mediterranean, with crystal blue waters and white sand beaches.

Set on the southern edge of Cornwall, the city has a long and rich history, dating all the way back to Roman times.

More than 800 years ago, it was a small market town and port, but over the centuries, it would grow and grow to become a major hub for trade and tin mining.

Being Cornwall’s biggest town or city, Truro has a bustling city centre with a focus on independent stores, charming cafes, and locally-owned restaurants.

Although at the heart of the city you’ll find many of your classic high street stores, in its winding lanes you’ll find plenty of independent shops perfect for a look around – such as Pydar Street, where you’ll find crafty boutiques and more colourful shops to explore.

After a stroll around the city, you’re sure to have worked up an appetite, and despite its smaller size, Truro is lucky enough to have one of the best fish and chip shops in the country.

Crowned the best chippie in Cornwall at the National Fish and Chip Awards, Kellaways is perfect for munching on some fresh-caught cod and crispy chips, all doused in salt and vinegar.

After finding out they’d finished third at this year’s awards, the Pengelly Way shop posted to Facebook: “Third in the country, wow! So proud of our team and everyone who has helped us get here! A massive thank you to our wonderful customers who have supported us throughout this journey.”

Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, said: “The bar for the National Fish and Chip Awards is set higher each year across the criteria the competitors are evaluated against, and our new titleholders have put everything into elevating their menus, sharpening their skills and developing their expertise. 

“The quick-service sector is constantly changing, but what remains is that customers expect a high-quality product that tastes like heaven, that sustainability is carefully considered throughout the experience, and the service is on-point.”
