Tesco says it intends to change a Clubcard rule later this year so younger people can maximise savings through their loyalty card scheme. Tesco’s Clubcard provides exclusive deals on groceries with Clubcard Prices as well as another benefits.

One of the most notable perks is the grocery chain’s £3.85 meal deal, which is £4.25 for those without the loyalty card. But the scheme is currently limited to shoppers aged 18 and above, preventing youngsters from getting the savings. Consumer organisation Which? has been pushing for a change to the policy for years, noting that the savings matter “so much for shoppers trying to make ends meet”.

It now appears a change could be on the way, with Tesco opening to the door to improved access to the benefits.

A spokesperson said: “We are actively reviewing Tesco Clubcard with the intention of making Clubcard available to under-18s this year,” The Sun reports.

Tesco noted that youngsters save money and find value via their Aldi Price Match and Everyday Low Prices ranges.

Age limits of this kind are common across the major UK supermarkets.

The Co-op says it is currently the only national food retailer in the country that allows 16 and 17-year-olds to save via its loyalty program, and has called on other supermarkets to lower age restrictions too.
