Alcaraz is the overwhelming favourite to win the semi-final after lifting the Wimbledon trophy in each of the last two seasons. But Fritz’s coach Michael Russell has insisted the result is not a foregone conclusion.

Discussing how Fritz can overcome the Spaniard on Centre Court, Russell told the ATP website: “The fundamental thing is that he doesn’t play overexcited or want to hit the ball harder or do things that he doesn’t do on a regular basis.

“He is a great strategist, has enormous tactical intelligence and sometimes tends to think too much. He needs to keep flowing on the court, without giving things too much thought.”

Russell then added: “It’s critical for Taylor to be efficient with his serve and move quickly around the court to gain the initiative.

“He has to try to take time away from Carlos, prevent him from being the one to dictate the pace of the game and dominate the points. We have to prevent it from coming to that as far as possible.

“He has to be very aggressive from the rest, hit with power from the back of the court and take risks. We know that Carlos is very explosive in his movements and can turn a defence into attack quickly.

“The percentage of first serves is going to be fundamental for Taylor to be able to play loose and put pressure.”

Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller to win his first Wimbledon title in 2023 and retained the trophy last year after thrashing the same player in straight sets.

And the two blockbuster stars could meet in the showpiece match for the third consecutive year on Sunday.

Djokovic has reached the Wimbledon semi-finals once again this year and is due to take on Jannik Sinner for a place in the tournament decider.

The Serbian had to cancel his practice session ahead of the last-four encounter after hurting his groin, while Sinner has also been forced to contend with an elbow issue.
