Suitcases will fit more clothes if you change 1 packing technique — not rolling | Travel News | Travel
One of the greatest challenges of an overseas trip is trying to jam all of your things into the airplane’s tiny luggage allowance. If you’re trying to travel light it can be a nightmare to stick to the cabin bag limits – but there is one change you can make that will ensure extra space in your bag.
One popular way to save space is by rolling your clothes – but this method may actually work better. The KonMari folding technique, made famous by Mari Kondo, involves folding your clothing into rectangles that can be stood up next to each other in your suitcase and save space.
How to do it
- To utilise this method, take your item of clothing and fold one side to the middle, then the other side over it, creating a rectangle.
- Then, fold it in half lengthways.
- From here, fold it into thirds, until it’s a small rectangle that can be slotted in alongside other items.
Another genius way to save space is to use a vacuum sealer. Simply place your clothes inside the bag, seal it and use a vacuum cleaner to remove the air. The result? Airtight packages that take up minimal space in your suitcase.
It’s also wise to skip the large and bulky toiletries like shampoo and body wash as most hotels will provide these free of charge. If you’re going abroad for a long time, consider just buying these when you arrive to save space in your suitcase.
Alternatively, many hotels will accept online deliveries ahead of your stay, so you can order your bathroom essentials to arrive before you do. It’s a simple way to travel lighter and avoid overpacking products you might not even need.
Jewellery and cable organisers are also a good idea. These will keep your items secure and untangled, and stop you rummaging through your suitcase to try and find what you need.
