Spanish Grand Prix qualifying results: Lando Norris snatches pole as Hamilton ends hoodoo | F1 | Sport

Lando Norris caused a major upset in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix, beating Max Verstappen to pole position by less than two-hundredths of a second. Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top three.

Just two tenths separated the top five drivers heading into the final runs of Q1 with Charles Leclerc leading the way from Verstappen and Norris. However, when the clock ticked down to zero, it was Lewis Hamilton on top.

At the bottom end of the field, there was nothing to celebrate in the VCARB and Williams garages with their four drivers populating the final two rows of the grid. Kevin Magnussen rounded out the bottom five as the Haas star was eliminated in Q1.

In Q2, things looked bleak for Hamilton and Sergio Perez after the first runs, but both frontrunners were able to secure their places in the final round of qualifying. There was no such luck for Fernando Alonso though; The home hero finished just below the cut-off line

His Aston Martin team-mate, Lance Stroll, was also eliminated, while Nico Hulkenberg was unable to improve on his final run. Both Sauber drivers rounded out the bottom five in Q2, representing a slight improvement on a miserable start to the year.
