Brits heading for Spain may soon have to wear a face mask again due to the huge surge in flu and Covid cases. Health chiefs will decide on December 3 whether to impose their compulsory use in certain indoor spaces, including hospitals and health centers, and possibly other areas with a large number of people, such as cinemas or theaters.

Spain’s Minister of Health, Mónica García, said local communities are committed to following the new measures. She said she hoped councillors of the Popular Party “are not going to put their political interests above the health of the population this year”.

Ms Garcia supported the gradual tightening of the use of masks in health and social care spaces, which will go from recommended to mandatory at maximum risk levels.

She said: “I am very sorry but from now on anyone who has symptoms of a cold should wear, in a responsible way, a mask.

“This is very, very simple. I am going to tell you as a minister: you arrive at a health centre, you put on your mask, you leave the health centre, you take it off, and thus you protect patients, you protect professionals and you protect yourself.

“If we are in a scenario of maximum risk, in which the mask, according to the protocol, has to be mandatory, for example, to go to health centres, hospitals or nursing homes or by health professionals, I understand that the communities are not going to refuse to follow that protocol.”

The Minister of Health explained that this season’s flu epidemic is arriving four to seven weeks earlier than in previous years.

This is due to the H3N2 virus, which has not been dominant in recent seasons, potentially leading to a decrease in people’s immunity.

On Monday, a new order in Andalusia order will recommend the use of face masks for staff and users of healthcare centres and social care facilities, both public and private.

Asturias, Castilla y León, the Valencian community, and Galicia have also agreed new mask rules.

The recommendations vary, but in general they call health and social care professionals who are in contact with vulnerable citizens to wear masks, and those who have flu symptoms in health centres.
