Smallest country in Africa is popular island with the same size population as Bath | Travel News | Travel

To the east of the African continent is a tiny country that’s a hit with  tourists despite its small size and population.

The Seychelles is the smallest country on the continent as well as the least populated sovereign African country, with an estimated population of just over 100,000 – similar to Bath which at the 2021 census had a population of 97,066.

Comprising 155 islands the Seychelles are famed for their gorgeous white sand beaches as well as its wildlife.

With so many islands to explore, the Seychelles is the perfect spot for some winter sun.

The islands are home to rare plants and animals you won’t see anywhere else, like the Coco-de-Mer palm tree and the giant Aldabra tortoises.

The Vallée de Mai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-see and is even believed by some to be the original Garden of Eden.

Anse Source D’Argent on La Digue island in the Seychelles is often described as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches – and it’s a hit with tourists.

This stunning white sand beach also boasts crystal clear waters, granite boulders and gently waving coconut palms.

When it comes to culture, the Seychelles are influenced by African, European, and Asian flavours and traditions. Visitors can enjoy Creole food packed with flavour, local music, and colourful festivals.

Life moves slower in the Seychelles, making it the perfect getaway for people who prefer a more relaxed holiday without the constant hustle and bustle of daily life – but don’t think it’s too quiet.

This island nation has the highest ranking for quality of life in all of Africa and is also one of its richest nations and people who live here enjoy the strongest passport in the world.

People from the Seychelles can travel visa-free to 156 countries, giving them more freedom than citizens of any other African country.
