Sainsbury’s to make major change across 30 UK stores | UK | News
Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s will make a huge change in 30 of its stores. Shoppers might be happy to hear that a popular UK coffee shop chain will now be available in some stores across the country.
The supermarket has closed all its in-store cafes as it prepares to replace them with Costa Coffee stores. Sainsbury’s did have its own cafes, but 61 of them have closed, resulting in 3,000 jobs being cut. Sainsbury’s said the “majority” of its “most loyal shoppers do not use the cafés regularly”. It said “cafés and food halls run by specialist partners are becoming more and more popular”, and that it was part of efforts to “simplify the business”.
Costa Coffee has more than 1,000 express self-serve coffee machines in Sainsbury’s stores and petrol stations. In 2023, these sold around 10 million cups of coffee.
According to reports, Costa Coffee has invested more than £3million to open in around 30 Sainsbury’s stores by summer this year.
In January alone, the coffee shop opened four new cafes in Sainsbury’s stores.
These include Monks Cross in York, Springfield in Chelmsford, Thanet West Wood Cross in Kent and Pepper Hill in the Gravesend area of Kent.
Around 10 locations are already lined up and are expected to open by the end of March.
Costa Coffee shops are reportedly set to open in the following 10 Sainsbury’s locations before March:
- Swindon, Bridgemead
- Newport
- Nantwich
- Durham
- Plymouth, Marsh Mills
- Stanway
- Kelso
- Denton
- Darlington
- Livingston
Swindon, Bridgemead, Newport, Nantwich, and Durham are expected to be open in February, with the rest launching by the end of the following month.
