A drone was seen slamming into a residential building in Moscow overnight. The unmanned aircraft exploded as it struck a tower block in the suburb of Krasnogorsk, injuring five people, including a child, according to a Russian official.

Krasnogorsk is a city in Russia‘s Krasnogorsky District in Moscow Oblast, located adjacent to the northwestern boundary of Moscow. The attack prompted the evacuation of 70 people from the high-rise, which suffered serious damage. The strike on the Russian capital also saw flights at Moscow’s three airports – Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky – temporarily suspended.

Regional governor Andrey Vorobyov said: “Five people were injured, including a child. Four were promptly taken to hospitals where they are receiving necessary medical care.”

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin claimed in a Telegram post that Russia had shot down three drones headed towards the capital.

The country’s Defence Ministry claimed it had shot down 111 Ukrainian drones overnight, 34 of which were over Rostov Oblast in the southwest, which borders Ukraine, The Kyiv Independent reports.

However, it reported only one drone being taken out by its air defenses over the Moscow Oblast, apparently contradicting the mayor’s claim.

Ukraine hasn’t claimed responsibility for the Krasnogorsk blast. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has been approached for comment via email.

It came as the European Union slapped further economic sanctions on Russia, adding to US President Donald Trump’s new punitive measures against the Russian oil industry launched hours earlier.

The American and European sanctions are intended as part of a broadened effort to deprive Moscow of revenue and supplies that fuel its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.

The additional US sanctions targeted Russia‘s two biggest oil companies, Open Joint Stock Company Rosneft Oil Company (Rosneft) and Lukoil OAO (Lukoil).

Addressing the Russian Geographical Society in Moscow, Putin said Russia will never bow to pressure from abroad, adding that “dialogue is always better than war”.

Trump launched the “tremendous” sanctions on Russian oil in an effort to bring Russia to the negotiating table. “I just felt it was time. We waited a long time,” he said.

Washington continues its attempts to broker an end to the fighting in Ukraine, though the Russian leader has shown little appetite for it thus far.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has been pushing for the international community to punish Russia more comprehensively for attacking his country, hailed the new restrictions.

“We waited for this. God bless, it will work. And this is very important,” Zelensky said.

The US sanctions came after Trump said that his plan for a meeting with Putin in Budapest was on hold as he didn’t want it to be a “waste of time.”
