A women’s rugby league team have been hailed after coming to the rescue of stranded motorists following a serious motorway incident. Players from Hull FC took it upon themselves to help the trapped occupants of a vehicle that crashed on the M62 over the weekend. They witnessed the accident while travelling to their Women’s Challenge Shield fixture against Rochdale Hornets on Sunday morning.

After seeing the vehicle leave the road, the team coach pulled over and several players jumped in to help the occupants escape from their vehicle, which had landed in a water-filled ditch. A number of staff members were also involved in the impromptu rescue operation. They gave first aid and helped to divert oncoming traffic away from the scene as they called for help.

Nobody involved in the crash was seriously hurt, although the occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The players and staff were commended by the emergency services personnel who quickly arrived on the scene following the incident.

Hull FC issued a statement recognising the heroic actions of their players, saying: “The team and support staff acted bravely and calmly when presented with an incredibly difficult situation, and the club extends their heartfelt gratitude for their actions.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust said: “We received an emergency call just before 9am on Sunday morning to report a collision on the M62 near Howden.

“Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene and two patients were conveyed to Hull Royal Infirmary.”

Following the incident, the team left the scene of the crash and went on to claim a 20-4 victory over Rochdale Hornets that afternoon. It saw them progress to the third round of the Women’s Challenge Shield.

The women’s team of Hull FC currently play in the RFL Championship, the second tier of women’s rugby league in England.

They will be hoping to compete for promotion to the Women’s Super League at the end of the 2026 season, which has only just got underway.
