Ruben Amorim should listen to Gary Neville – he’s spot on about where Man Utd problem lies | Football | Sport

Ruben Amorim should take Gary Neville‘s advice and stick with what works for his Manchester United players. The former Sporting boss is finally making slow progress at Old Trafford after a nightmare first season in charge. However, it seems like whenever the Red Devils take a step forward, they are immediately pegged back.

Their impressive victory over Newcastle on Boxing Day led many fans to believe United were back on the saddle after drawing with Bournemouth in their previous match. That optimism was dampened just days later as they were held to a draw by basement boys Wolves, who have failed to win a Premier League match all season.

Joshua Zirkzee opened the scoring with a deflected effort in the first half, only for Ladislav Krejci to equalise on the stroke of half-time. United were unable to find a winner in the second period and ended up being forced to share the spoils.

The blame for that result can be placed firmly at the feet of Amorim, who bizarrely decided to change his tactics from the win over Newcastle.

Instead of sticking with the 4-2-3-1 formation that inspired victory and a clean sheet against the Magpies, the United boss reverted to type and went back to his preferred 3-4-3 system.

It failed to have the desired effect as the Red Devils huffed and puffed with nothing to show for their efforts, giving Wolves a rare moment to savour in the form of a point at Old Trafford.

Amorim was forced to change his starting team for the match, with Mason Mount injured and Zirkzee coming into the side. But why didn’t he keep the shape that proved so effective against Newcastle?

Neville was quick to raise this point on Sky Sports, saying: “I think I’ve watched enough United over this last five or six weeks. I’ve watched six out of their last seven games to know what looks right and what isn’t right and I’m really surprised.

“Zirkzee on this right side having to chase back to right back almost, [Diogo] Dalot right wing back, Ayden Heaven right centre back, [Patrick] Dorgu over on the left back where he’s not been playing well.

“All of it just isn’t as good as it was in the last couple of games where they’ve played in different positions and we should be OK to say that. I think that’s what the fans are thinking inside this stadium. They’re in exactly the same place as we are.”

Hopefully, the draw against Wolves will have taught Amorim a valuable lesson. If something works, stick with it! There was no reason for the United boss to fall back into his comfort blanket and he was made to pay the price.

When he arrived at Old Trafford, his players weren’t capable of effectively playing his 3-4-3 system and it showed. Why would he persist in trying to make it work over a year later, when he found a better solution against Newcastle just days earlier?

That is a question Amorim will need to consider as he looks to guide United back to the Premier League’s upper reaches over the coming weeks.
