Upon claiming the Players Championship in 2025, Rory McIlroy admitted that he had wrestled with adversity. The Northern Irishman captured the crown at TPC Sawgrass en route to securing the Masters and a subsequent career Grand Slam. This year’s Players Championship is currently taking place and will conclude on Sunday evening. Nevertheless, McIlroy clinched the Players title for a second time last year after defeating J.J. Spaun in a nail-biting playoff that extended into Monday morning.

The world No.2 overturned a four-shot disadvantage into a three-stroke advantage during a thrilling final round on Sunday to position himself in contention. Severe weather conditions had even prompted a four-hour suspension, where he faltered along the closing stretch to finish on 12 under alongside Spaun. A shortage of light then pushed the competition into a fifth day, requiring the two players to return for a three-hole playoff, where McIlroy demonstrated his composure and determination as he swept to victory.

The 36-year-old made a candid confession after his triumph, though, about experiencing a significant case of anxiety as he progressed to the title. He said: “Standing over that tee shot on 16 this morning is the most nervous I’ve been in a long time.

“So feeling like that and being able to hit the shots that I needed, whilst your stomach is sort of not feeling great and your legs are a little shaky and your heart rate is racing… To have to go through that, it’s nice to have that in recent memory for some of the tournaments coming up.”

Spaun had been forthright about enduring his own devastating setbacks in the sport, and McIlroy was subsequently asked whether he identified with his remarks, disclosing the anguish he experienced regarding squandered chances over the years.

“Absolutely. I think we’ve all had periods where we’ve felt like that,” he said. “I’ve had to go through it. I’ve had my heart broken a lot over the last few years when I’ve had chances on Sundays and it hasn’t quite materialised.

“But we all have to go through it, or at least all of us not named Tiger Woods. It’s a part of the process, it’s a part of the learning journey, and ultimately those are the days that make us better.”

The Players proved to be a springboard for McIlroy’s tremendous success in 2025. His Master’s triumph was his first major in 10 years, and in September, he helped guide Team Europe to an unforgettable victory over the US at Bethpage Black in the Ryder Cup.

McIlroy also confessed he didn’t realise just how significant the Players was until he secured it for a second time. He said: “Back in 2019 [when he won his first Players], I maybe didn’t appreciate how big this tournament was and how much it meant.

“Every time we come back to this tournament, it gets bigger and better each and every year, from the course to the facilities for the players, to the facilities for the fans. I don’t want to put any sort of label on it but it is one of the biggest championships in the world. That was part of the reason.”
