Roger Federer back playing tennis as retired star raises eyebrows at Laver Cup | Tennis | Sport

Roger Federer has revealed that he’s been “back on the court” two years after ending his professional tennis career.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion famously enjoyed an emotional farewell at the 2022 Laver Cup, when the team event was staged in London’s O2 Arena.

Federer co-created the Laver Cup and is back as a spectator in Berlin this year. He also raised eyebrows when he took to the iconic black court for a hit earlier in the week.

It wasn’t an isolated incident – the former world No. 1 is finally enjoying the sport in retirement. Federer has been playing with his friends and family over the summer, while he also enjoyed Wimbledon and the US Open as a fan.

Ahead of the second day of play in Berlin, Federer gave an update on his post-playing career. “I’ve been at the US Open, I’ve been at Wimbledon, here I am again. I’m back on a tennis court basically, just dressed up in a different look,” he laughed.

“So I’m very happy it’s Laver Cup time. We’ve been enjoying our vacation with the family, we were in the snow at the weekend in Switzerland. It was very cold, we had this much snow. It was amazing. Life is great.”

Federer has also been busy with the Laver Cup. Ahead of the tournament, he launched a new racket with Wilson and held a demo event which saw him take to the court, where he claimed he “still got it”.

The 43-year-old addressed his recent outing on the court in Berlin and said it was nowhere near his first hit of the year. ” That was fun. So I had a clinic here with Wilson, I also had a Uniqlo kids clinic where we speak to them and give back, and obviously I just launched a new Wilson racket,” he explained.

“So it actually was amazing to be back on the centre court and just playing and it made me feel how, if I play a match, it’s so much fun.”
