Rats could ‘invade your garden’ if you keep two simple things outdoors
It’s fair to say that nobody wants rats in their homes.
But, as much as nobody wants it to become a problem, it can happen. Certain things can cause them to pay a visit, and you may not realise that you’re doing things to attract them.
If you spend a lot of time in your garden, you may not be aware that certain things you have outside can make your outdoor space attractive to the pesky pests.
But, fear not, as you may be able to prevent them if you follow some simple advice. Daniel Steward, Managing Director at Shield Pest Control, has issued some essential guidance.
Shield Pest Control is one of London’s longest-running pest control businesses, and holds a Royal Warrant from His Majesty the King, working across the Royal Household. Therefore, Daniel is someone you may want to pay attention to.
Daniel said: “During the winter months, you may notice an increase in rodent activity. This surge is typically due to rodents seeking shelter from the cold and searching for food.
“Rats, in particular, can pose significant risks to both your home and health. They can cause damage to structures, wiring and insulation, and many carry diseases. Therefore, it’s essential to take preventative measures to avoid a rodent infestation.
“To keep rats out of your home, make sure all potential entry points are thoroughly sealed. Rodents can squeeze through small openings so no gap or crack should be overlooked.
“Additionally, rats thrive in cluttered environments so decluttering your home, particularly areas such as your garage and attic, will help reduce potential hiding spots. In the garden, be mindful of how you manage waste.”
He added: “Ensure rubbish is properly disposed of in sealed bins as leftover food, fallen fruit or bird seed can attract rats. Since rats also need water to survive, it’s a good idea to install a mesh barrier around ponds or any other water sources to make them inaccessible.
“We would always recommend seeking help from a professional such as Shield Pest Control if your infestation becomes too big to manage by yourself.”
So, if you store rubbish in your garden, or have a pond, you should always remain vigilant. Both can cause rats to visit and explore your garden.
If you ever spot rats, or are worried you may have an infestation, it’s vital to contact a pest control expert. They’ll be able to best advise you on what to do next.
