‘Princess Anne showed true colours after I won at Winter Olympics’ | Other | Sport

A Winter Olympics athlete spoke of the joy she had when meeting Princess Anne at the Winter Olympics. Canadian freestyle skier Meghan Oldham earned the bronze medal in the Women’s Slopestyle Final last Monday in what was her first Olympic medal.

The 24-year-old was greeted by the Royal who presented her with the honour as well as enjoying a brief chat with Oldham in a moment she gushed about when speaking to CBC Olympics journalist Ariel Helwani. The athlete said: “She was so sweet. She was just saying congratulations, like, this is such a big accomplishment, and then she was also just asking me about some other events that I have coming up.”

She added: “She was like, ‘Are you competing again?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m competing in Big Air.’ So she just wished luck, which was really nice” while Helwani replied: “A little chit chat with the Princess.” Princess Anne’s history with Canada is long-standing with the 75-year-old holding ceremonial roles with numerous regiments of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Alongside awarding Oldham with her prize, Anne – who is a member of the International Olympic Committee – presented several more Olympic medals on Monday at Milano Cortina and was a former Olympian herself 50 years ago. She became the first member of the British royal family to participate in the Olympics when she competed for Great Britain’s equestrian team at the 1976 Summer Games.

Her daughter, Zara Tindall, continued the Royal representation in the Olympics by winning the silver medal at the 2012 Games in London. After leaving Milan, she made the journey to Edinburgh to watch Scotland defeat England 31-20 in their Six Nations clash this past weekend.

She then briefly spoke to him before giving him the cup. The cringeworthy moment did little to subdue Tuipulotu’s happiness following the victory as he told BBC Sport: “I’m extremely proud. To go through what we went through last week really hurt and we understood because we deserved it. Ultimately Italy were better than us. We really felt like our backs were against the wall and we showed up today.”
