Pretty European seaside town that has hardly any tourists giving out £0.80 holidays | Travel News | Travel

Dreaming of a beach holiday on a stunning island in the middle of the Mediterranean? Turns out the town of Siculiana is offering holidays for a mere £0.83 to people wanting a three-night stay on the Sicilian island in order to help increase tourism during the off-peak season. The beautiful beach town on the south coast of the Mediterranean’s largest island boasts a charming town with a 14th-century castle and incredible beaches.

Just eight miles away from the provincial capital of Agrigento, Siculiana is a rare gem which is much less crowded than other parts of Sicily with stunning cobblestone streets and the natural white sand beaches of the Torre Salsa Nature Reserve. The town is only a drive away from the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is home to some of Sicily’s most impressive ancient Greek temples, including the Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in the world.

In contrast to many other places in Europe like the Balearic Islands, for example, that are protesting against mass tourism and introducing measures to curb overtourism, the Sicilian town is eager to attract more visitors, especially as its population has decreased from 5,000 to 4,000 over the past two decades.

To apply, you’ll need to be over 18 and create a video explaining why you’d like to visit, the i Paper reports.

If you are lucky enough to get selected, you’ll pay just £0.83 for a three-day stay, including accommodation, meals, guided tours, and even a welcome and farewell aperitif.

The only thing you’ll have to do is make a video during your stay to share with the town hall.

Siculiana mayor, Giuseppe Zambito, told the i: “We want to make people discover the beauties of our unique town, which has many gems worth seeing alongside its architecture and cuisine.

“It’s outside of the usual popular tourism routes, and we hope that the proximity of Siculiana to the archaeological site of Agrigento with its Valley of Temples, nominated as Italy’s Culture Capital this year, will lure more tourists over here as well.”

Applications are open until this Saturday, March 15, with winners to be announced by March 20.

The first trip will be taking place from April 4-6, 2025 and the town hall is planning on redoing this competition in October and next spring.

A total of 10 couples or families will be chosen for this incredible three-day trip to Sicily.
