Express Sport readers have selected their Premier League Team of the Year after the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign. The season ended last Sunday with Liverpool llifting the trophy while Chelsea secured a crucial victory at Nottingham Forest to secure Champions League qualification. Aston Villa’s defeat at Manchester United allowed Newcastle to secure fifth, and a return to Europe’s premier competition, via goal difference. Here’s how your TOTY looks…

Goalkeeper: Alisson

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker is widely regarded as the best in the world in his position and despite missing 10 Premier League games, is the man voted into the XI after over 7,000 votes. He ended with 10 clean sheets from 28 games and 29 goals conceded.

The Brazil No.1 beats competition from joint-Golden Glove winners Matz Sels and David Raya. The Nottingham Forest and Arsenal shot-stoppers ended with 13 clean sheets, both from 38 games, and ended level on 17 per cent of the votes. Dean Henderson of Crystal Palace collected 11 per cent after 11 shut-outs.

Right-back: Trent Alexander-Arnold

Real Madrid’s newest recruit, and a second Liverpool title-winner, Trent Alexander-Arnold was a comfortable winner at right-back. Like his former team-mate Alisson, he got 41 per cent of the votes. Trent also suffered an injury-interrupted year but still produced three goals and seven assists in 33 games.

Second to Alexander-Arnold was Crystal Palace’s Daniel Munoz (18 per cent) while Tino Livramento of Newcastle and versatile Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber both ended on 14 per cent. Nottingham Forest right-back Ola Aina ended with 10 per cent.

Right centre-back: William Saliba

It was a little bit closer in the position next to Alexander-Arnold, with Arsenal centre-back William Saliba the victor on 45 per cent. The Frenchman, 24, is certifiably one of the best in Europe and was superb for an Arsenal team who conceded the least goals in the Premier League with just 34. The Gunners only leaked 29 in 35 top-flight outings with him on the pitch.

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, his international team-mate, was second in the voting with 30 per cent. Nikola Milenkovic had a superb debut season for Forest but despite his contributions, which included five goals, the Serbian only ended on 14 per cent.

Left centre-back: Virgil van Dijk

No player in the Premier League had more clean sheets this season than the imperious Virgil van Dijk (14) who was pivotal to Liverpool’s title triumph. As well as producing another all-timer season defensively, only two central defenders scored more times than the Dutchman (three) too.

The second most dominant voting percentage of all 11 positions, Van Dijk earned 71 per cent of the votes. Dean Huijsen, who has already swapped Bournemouth for Real Madrid, was second on 10 per cent just ahead of Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes and Newcastle’s Dan Burn (both seven per cent).

Left-back: Milos Kerkez

Another player poised for a transfer. Bournemouth’s Liverpool-bound full-back Milos Kerkez was another comfortable winner in his position. The Hungarian played all 38 games for the Cherries as they finished an impressive ninth and conceded just 46 times. Offensively, Kerkez produced two goals and six assists and is now likely to cost £45million to become one of the most expensive full-backs of all time.

Behind him was Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella (21 per cent) with the Spaniard one of the best players for the fourth-placed Blues, offering five goals and two assists. Fulham’s Antonee Robinson racked up an impressive 10 assists from left-back – three more than any other defender – but only took 10 per cent of the votes behind Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol on 11 per cent.

Right central midfield: Ryan Gravenberch

A fourth player from the champions – Ryan Gravenberch enjoyed a magnificant season as Liverpool’s makeshift No.6. Arne Slot’s decision to utilise the Dutchman in a deeper role paid dividends for the title winners. Fifty-two per cent of the responses picked him in this position.

Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes came second with 28 per cent while Chelsea man Enzo Fernandez ended on 10 per cent.

Left central midfield: Declan Rice

The tighest vote of the lot. Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister earned 40 per cent of the votes but still missed out to Arsenal’s Declan Rice, who just pipped the Argentine with 43 per cent. Rice was the standout player for the second-placed Gunners in a box-to-box role and produced four goals and seven assists in the league while stepping up as a key man for the injury-hit north Londoners.

While Mac Allister just missed out, Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo – another to enjoy an excellent season – only collated seven per cent of the votes.

Liverpool FC v Crystal Palace FC - Premier League

No.10: Bruno Fernandes

Another very close vote saw Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes come out on top with 30 per cent. The Portuguese playmaker finished with eight goals and 11 assists, which meant he was directly responsible 43 per cent (19 of 44) of the Red Devils’ league goals.

That was enough to beat competition from Crystal Palace’s eight-goal, eight-assist FA Cup hero Eberechi Eze and Cole Palmer of Chelsea who racked up 15 goals and nine assists for the Blues. Morgan Gibbs-White ended on 16 per cent after seven goals and 10 assists.

Right wing: Mohamed Salah

Unsurprisingly, the most dominant vote was on the right side of the attack. Mohamed Salah won the Premier League Golden Boot and Playmaker awards and was named Player of the Season thanks to his 29 goals and 18 assists. That made him responsible for 54 per cent of Liverpool’s goals.

After receiving 80 per cent of the vote, Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka beat Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford to second place (10 per cent versus five). Saka missed three months and still tallied six goals and 11 assists, while Mbeumo finished with 20 and eight.

Striker: Alexander Isak

Another comfortable winner. Newcastle centre-forward Alexander Isak plundered 23 goals and six assists in 34 games for the Magpies as they secured Champions League qualification. Outside of the Premier League he also helped end their 70-year wait for a major trophy.

He ended with 73 per cent of the votes to beat the 22-goal Erling Haaland (12 per cent). Chris Wood scored 20 times for Forest but only received four per cent.

Left wing: Matheus Cunha

Wolves’ Matheus Cunha, who is set to join Manchester United imminently for £62.5million, won another competitive battle on the left side. The Portuguese attacker was by far Wolves’ best player with 15 goals and six assists from 33 games and secured 39 per cent of the vote.

That was enough to beat Liverpool’s 13-goal, seven-assist Luis Diaz. Morgan Rogers, still just 22, shone for Aston Villa with eight goals and 11 assists and ended on 17 per cent.
