POLL: Can the King save the UK’s relationship with US? | Royal | News

King Charles and Queen Camilla will undertake an official visit to America this month, it was confirmed earlier this week. The exact dates and length of the visit are unknown due to security concerns.

The visit will mark the 250th anniversary of American Independence has been shrouded in controversy following the Iran war, which the US and Israel are prosecuting. The visit is taking place at a diplomatically sensitive time, with US President Donald Trump having recently lashed out at Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

The US President recently described Sir Keir as “no Winston Churchill” and also called British aircraft carriers “toys” and said “don’t bother” to send Royal Navy help as “we don’t need it”.

Trump also said: “He ruins relationships. We are very surprised. This is not Winston Churchill that we’re dealing with.”

As well as celebrating the historic connections, the upcoming visit will also be about the modern bilateral relationship between the two nations.

It marks the first state visit to the US since 2007, when the late Queen Elizabeth II was greeted by former President George W. Bush.

The US President, which has previously spoken of his fondness of the Royal Family, has referred to the upcoming trip as a “momentous occasion” and is said to be planning to host a “beautiful” banquet dinner at the White House.

He has also said: “I look forward to spending time with the King, whom I greatly respect. It will be terrific.”

There were calls for the trip to be postponed due to it taking place against the backdrop of the Iran war, which has led to significant tension between UK and US leadership.

Following their visit, the King is taking a solo trip to Bermuda.
