An 18-year-old was killed and his 12-year-old brother seriously injured after the roof of their family home collapsed while they slept in Manacor in the early hours of Thursday morning, triggering a major emergency response and a full judicial investigation. The collapse occurred at about 5.15am at a house on Calle Sant Francesc, in the centre of the Majorcan town. The victim was later named as Miguel Angel Florez. Emergency medical teams were unable to save him.
A spokesperson for SAMU 061 said: “Medics could do nothing more than confirm the death of one male, age 18, at the scene due to non-survivable trauma.” His younger brother, aged 12, was trapped beneath the rubble in another bedroom. Firefighters from Bombers de Mallorca carried out a high-risk rescue operation to reach both victims.

The chief of the Mallorca Fire Service said: “At 5:12 AM, we received a call reporting a structural collapse at a residence in Manacor. Upon arrival, crews found that the roof slab of the first floor had collapsed onto the bedroom below. We carried out a high-risk rescue operation involving the removal of approximately one meter of rubble to extract two victims.”
The 12-year-old was stabilised at the scene and transferred to Son Espases University Hospital in Palma, where he was admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit with multiple traumatic injuries. His condition is serious.
The parents were also asleep inside the house at the time of the collapse. They were not physically injured but were treated for shock.
Fire crews warned that the danger did not end with the initial collapse. Around an hour later, a second section of the roof gave way, underlining the instability of the structure. During this secondary movement, one firefighter sustained light injuries.

The fire service chief said: “During the operation, a secondary movement of the structure occurred, causing light injuries to one of our officers. The building has been evacuated and cordoned off as it currently does not meet safety conditions for occupancy.”
The National Police have opened a full investigation into the cause of the collapse, with both the Judicial Police and Scientific Police involved.
A National Police spokesperson said: “At this time, all hypotheses remain open. We are working alongside municipal technicians to inspect the building’s infrastructure. A report will be submitted to the Court of Instruction in Manacor once the technical survey is complete.”
The scale of the emergency response included fire crews, National Police, local police, ambulances and a psychological support team. Manacor mayor Miquel Oliver also attended the scene shortly after the incident.
In an official statement, Manacor City Council described the tragedy as a day of mourning for the town.
Mayor Miquel Oliver said: “This is a black day for our municipality. The City Council of Manacor expresses its deepest condolences and all its support to the family affected by the tragic collapse on Calle Sant Francesc.
“In memory of the young man who lost his life, we have declared three days of official mourning and have suspended all institutional acts and the festivities of Sant Antoni for today. Our thoughts are with the brother currently in the hospital, and we hope for his recovery.”
Miguel Angel Florez was a saxophonist with the Manacor Band of Music, and his death has caused deep shock in the local cultural community.
The assistant director of the Manacor Band of Music said: “From the Band of Music, we want to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends. As best we can, we will continue playing as a band.”
As a mark of respect, Sant Antoni festivities in Manacor have been altered. The first two traditional dances of the demons were cancelled, and during the customary cavalcade from the town hall to the parish church, the band of music will not perform any pieces, playing only a drum roll.
Investigators are now working to establish how a residential building collapsed without warning, as Manacor mourns the sudden loss of a young life and awaits further updates on the condition of the injured child.
