While packing might not be the most fun thing about going on holiday, it does get the excitement going as you get to decide what you want to bring with you on your travels.
If you’re going on a cruise specifically, you will also have to take into account the different rules each cruise line has in place in order to keep all passengers as safe as possible while you’re out at sea. This often includes each ship having a list of prohibited items that passengers are not allowed to bring with them.
To help others keep track of what items are best left at home, one travel enthusiast named Laurie has taken to Instagram, where she’s better known as ‘traveltipsbylaurie’ to her 312,000 followers, to share her top tips on how to pack for a cruise.
In one video, she went on to share the one item no passenger is allowed to bring with them, as they will get confiscated as you get onto the cruise ship.
“Do not get kicked off your ship by doing this one travel tip for the electronics that you bring to the ship,” Laurie said at the start of the video. “Just save yourself the stress by doing this one travel tip.”

“In our room with two twin beds, there is only one outlet section on one side, so get a powerstrip that is non-surge protecting, this one’s from Amazon,” she told viewers.
She explained in the caption of the post that regular power strip towers or power strips (also known as extension leads) will not be allowed on your cruise holiday, as these will be confiscated by staff upon arrival.
This is because their surge protection components create a significant fire hazard. Cruise ship electrical systems differ from homes, and the interaction between surge protectors and the ship’s power grid can cause overheating, trip circuit breakers, and pose serious risks.
However, you will be able to carry on a “non surge protector” power strip, which are usually approved to use on cruise ships. Multi-port USB chargers (without high-voltage outlets) are also usually safe. However, you should contact the cruise ship you’re travelling with to confirm this.
If your power strip does get confiscated upon boarding the ship, the cruise ship employees will mark it and make sure you get it back upon disembarking.
Several people soon took to the comment section to share their thoughts, as many had no idea about this strict rule on cruise ships.
“Oh I had no idea,” one person said.
Someone else shared: “I brought one a few years ago and it was taken right away. I got it as I exited the cruise ship. You are absolutely right!!!”
Another person commented: “Royal [Caribbean] doesn’t allow any power plugs with a cord. They are only allowing non surge protectors that plug directly in. I thought Celebrity (owned by same company) had been doing this, too.”
