Onana handed new blow after Man Utd transfer as announcement made | Football | Sport
Andre Onana has been dealt another setback after being excluded from Cameroon’s squad for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament. The 29-year-old was frozen out of Ruben Amorim‘s squad before joining Trabzonspor on loan during the summer.
Altay Bayindir and subsequently summer acquisition Senne Lammens saw Onana sidelined from United’s setup prior to his switch to Turkiye. He has gone on to feature ten times for Trabzonspor, keeping three clean sheets during that spell with nine wins out of 14 placing them third in the standings behind Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.
Onana has also turned out three times for Cameroon, with two of those matches resulting in defeats for his national side. The latest setback came against DR Congo, which eliminated Cameroon from contention for next summer’s World Cup.
He has now been handed a further disappointment with the announcement, confirmed via the Cameroon FA’s Instagram page, that he will not be representing his nation at AFCON during December and possibly January. Instead, Simon Omossola, Devis Epassy, Simon Ngapandouetnbu and Edouard Sombang will be the goalkeepers travelling to the competition.
Their caption stated: “Here are the 28 #LionsIndomptables who will defend the colours of Cameroon at the CAN Total Energies Morocco 2025,” The accompanying image displayed small photographs of those selected to participate, with United’s Bryan Mbeumo included.
Notable names such as Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and former Tottenham winger Georges-Kevin N’Koudou have been included in the 28-man squad, while Vincent Aboubakar has been overlooked. The exclusion of Onana is unexpected given his consistent presence in goal for all their recent matches.
This marks another blow in his career, following a harsh departure from Old Trafford, with United boss Amorim providing a comprehensive assessment on Onana post his exit.
He stated: “I wish the best for Andre. He was really good at working, trying to help the players. Sometimes you can have all the quality in the world, but sometimes you need to change the environment to return to your level. That was a feeling, not just from us, but also from Andre.”
