Nigel Farage fires back at Trevor Phillips over Keir Starmer claim | Politics | News

Nigel Farage hit back at Sky’s Trevor Phillips over claims his political comeback could be responsible if Sir Keir Starmer wins the keys to No 10 this week.

Kicking off an interview on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips programme, the host introduced the Reform leader by saying: “Now to the man who could be more responsible than any other individual for putting Sir Keir Starmer into Downing Street.”

But Mr Farage insisted the Labour leader would have won the General Election on July 4 even if he had not made his bombshell political comeback.

The arch-Brexiteer said: “You’ve got to laugh, haven’t you? You follow this narrative that all of the media follow.

“Let’s get it straight. We’ve had 14 years of Conservative government, a mega majority in 2019 which I significantly helped them to obtain.

“Millions of those voters feel utterly betrayed. If I’d stayed at home, if I’d gone to the Bahamas fishing for the month, Keir Starmer would have won a big majority anyway.

“And many of our voters, if they’re polled and spoken to, if we weren’t here wouldn’t vote for anybody.”

Mr Farage initially said he would not stand in the General Election after Rishi Sunak called a surprise summer vote.

But around a week into the campaign he announced he would return as Reform’s leader and run in Clacton.

His return has led to the insurgent party overtaking the Tories in some polls ahead of the election, while Labour has maintained a double-digit lead.

The Tories have repeatedly warned backing Reform is a vote for Sir Keir.
