Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services out there, and while it’s great for watching your favourite films and TV shows from decades ago, it’s become so much more than that in recent years. Netflix had its first hit with an original series in 2013 with House of Cards, and since then, it’s been delivering high-quality shows and films year after year.

Starting today (January 16th), you can sink your teeth into a brand new Netflix original film that has already been getting so much hype from people online that it’s been referred to as a “future classic”.

The Rip is an action thriller film directed by Joe Carnahan and starring two of Hollywood‘s most prolific actors – Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The two stars and longtime friends reunite on screen as two Miami-based cops, with Damon playing Lieutenant Dane Dumars and Affleck starring as Detective Sergeant JD Byrne.

Alongside Damon and Affleck, Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Kyle Chandler, and Lina Esco also star.

The film is inspired by true events and follows a group of Miami police officers who discover a stash of millions in cash. As outsiders learn about their big score, distrust starts to brew, and the group begins to question who they can really rely on.

After the first trailer for the film was released in September, fans flocked to Reddit to discuss their excitement for the feature. Some even said they believed the film would be so good it would become a “classic” that people continue to watch and talk about for years to come.

One person said: “I could watch a movie with this exact vibe every Thursday evening for the rest of my life.”

Another added: “Future dad movie classic.”

A third posted: “I love this cast. I am thoroughly seated for the trailer and think the story of how Matt and Ben decided to make more movies together is incredibly sweet.”

Someone else shared: “Less than a minute, and I’m all in. Had to stop before the trailer told me everything.”

The Rip brings Damon and Affleck back for the 16th feature film that the lifelong friends have worked on together. They found commercial success as a duo with 1997’s Good Will Hunting, and last year worked together on both The Accountant 2 and Kiss of the Spider Woman. 

The pair met through their mothers when they were children, after they were set up on a playdate at Affleck’s home when Affleck was eight, and Damon was 10. They became close friends during their high school years, and stayed in touch as they both aspired to become actors.

Speaking about his friendship with Damon, Affleck previously said: “This friendship has been essential and defining and so important to me in my life. There were a few critical times, which are private and I don’t want to share, but where [Damon’s] support was so profoundly meaningful to me that I don’t think I would’ve been able to be successful without it.”

And Damon has alluded to even more collaborations with Affleck on the horizon. In 2021 after working on The Last Duel together, Damon said he wanted to make his friendship with Affleck a “priority” in his life.

He stated: “Why aren’t we doing this more often? And getting into your 50s, you just go: if we don’t make it a priority, it just isn’t going to happen.”
