It’s common to see travellers adding some kind of “identification marker” to their suitcase before heading off on holiday.

Not only does this make it easier to spot their luggage on the carousel after landing, but it also offers reassurance they haven’t accidentally picked up someone else’s bag.

However, a travel-focused TikTok channel has warned against this popular airport habit, claiming it could actually do more harm than good.

In a video, they said: “Attention travellers! Tying ribbons to your suitcase might seem like a cute way to personalise your luggage, but it could lead to some major problems.

“A baggage handler has revealed that those colourful ribbons can easily get caught in airport machinery, potentially causing delays, or even risking damage or loss of your bags.”

Instead, luggage brand Eminent recommends using colourful stickers or a protective cover to achieve the same effect.

In a statement, the company said: “Selecting the right luggage tags and accessories can help your suitcase stand out, while adding a touch of personality and practicality.

“When choosing luggage tags, opt for bold colours or eye-catching designs that are easy to spot on a busy carousel.

“Bright hues, patterns, or fun shapes – such as animals or travel-themed designs – can make your luggage instantly recognisable.

“Durability is also key. Choose tags made from strong materials like leather, silicone, or reinforced plastic that can withstand the rigours of travel.

“Make sure the attachment mechanism, such as a strap or buckle, is secure and sturdy. Some tags even include locking features for added security.”

Sharing their own tips, one Reddit user said: “Red duct tape crudely wrapped around the suitcase handle won’t come off.

“It’s ugly, easy to spot, and the texture is an unmistakable reminder to anyone who might grab it by mistake. I got that tip from a now-retired United captain.”

Another user added: “My dad draws red squares on every side with a paint marker. He travels all the time.”

A third said: “I use duct tape with penguins on it. In all my travels, I’ve never seen anyone else use it.”

Some other user shared a more unusual experience: “One of my suitcases is bright pink with black polka dots and a huge Hello Kitty face on it.

“It was left behind by the airline on my last trip (long story), and I was given a lost luggage form that had already been filled out. My suitcase was described as ‘pink with no distinguishing features’.

“It arrived safely at my hotel the next morning, thankfully. We do follow this tip though — all of our luggage is very distinctive, with interesting tags, stickers, and so on. It just made me laugh that my most unique suitcase was described simply as ‘pink’.”
