Netflix just killed a popular way to stream to your TV

If you enjoy watching Netflix by streaming it from your phone to your TV or Google Chromecast, you might be about to lose that convenience. Netflix has reportedly removed the ability to cast from its iOS and Android apps to the majority of TVs and modern streaming devices.

As spotted by Android Authority, Netflix appears to have rolled out this change recently, with the latest app updates removing the functionality and the familiar cast button from the Netflix app.

“Netflix no longer supports casting shows from a mobile device to most TVs and TV-streaming devices,” Netflix said in an updated note on a support page of its website. “You’ll need to use the remote that came with your TV or TV-streaming device to navigate Netflix.”

The same page states: “If you’re using an older Chromecast device or a TV that works with Google Cast, follow the instructions below to troubleshoot the issue.”

Android Authority said newer Google TV and Google TV Streamer devices can no longer stream in this way, with a Netflix customer care representative reportedly informing one user that “if the device has its own remote, you can’t cast.”

This may mean that older Chromecast devices and TVs, which were designed to receive casts from mobile devices but do not themselves come with a dedicated remote, will continue to offer the Cast functionality on Netflix.

Netflix’s support page also confirms that even if you have an older compatible Chromecast or TV, you will only be able to cast if you pay for one of Netflix’s ad-free plans. Those on the cheaper tiers with ads will be blocked from casting.

“If you’re on an ad-supported experience, you won’t be able to use your TV as a display for Netflix content playing on your mobile device (casting or mirroring),” Netflix confirmed.

Many people prefer casting from their mobile device to a TV screen as it can be easier to control the app from the touchscreen of a phone or tablet rather than using a TV remote to navigate Netflix and use the search function.

A frustrated user posted on Reddit about the change, claiming casting was removed from ad-free Netflix plans on November 10 “with zero warning”.

“I’m annoyed, as chromecasting is the main way that I watch streaming,” they said. “It gives me all of the control to use my phone as a remote control and searching for stuff is so much easier. And I’m not sure WHY the change was made.”

The change does seem like a user-hostile way to push customers into directly using the Netflix app on a TV rather than via casting, but Netflix has not indicated the reason this change has been made. It’s unclear if it is simply taking away a feature or if there is a technical reason for the removal.
