‘Naturally gifted’ jockey, 18, dies after being involved in horror bike crash | Racing | Sport
A ‘naturally gifted’ young jockey, Ngakau Halley, 18, tragically lost his life following a severe collision involving the dirt bike he was riding and a car. In his third season of an apprenticeship in New Zealand, Halley had achieved 18 wins this term, bringing his career total to 46 victories.
The accident occurred when Halley’s dirt bike collided with a vehicle at an intersection in Whitoria, as reported by Waikato Police. “Sadly, the rider of the dirtbike received critical injuries and was transported to hospital where they later died,” confirmed the police statement.
“Two young people in the car were transported to hospital with moderate injuries. The road was closed while the Serious Crash Unit conducted a scene examination. Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.”
Halley was subsequently identified as the casualty.
“It’s tragic, words just can’t describe it. I was talking with him on Monday and then this happens,” lamented New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Northern Riding Master Noel Harris in a conversation with LoveRacingNZ.
“He was very polite and he was a very talented boy. You knew straight away when you saw him on a horse that he was a natural. From where he was brought up, they just jump on a horse and you are part of it.”
Harris reminisced about Halley’s innate equestrian skills.
Despite his success in racing, Halley had initially set his sights on a professional rugby league career, having played hooker for his local club and district from a tender age.
He later shifted focus after riding track work and subsequently began his apprenticeship with trainer Debbie Sweeney.
“He was a natural talent, and that is just what you want,” Harris remarked. “It’s tragic, he was a lovely boy.”
In the wake of the tragedy, leading Australia-based jockey Blake Shinn commented: “Such a devastating tragedy. Sending strength and sympathy to the family, friends and all in the NZ Racing community.”
A fundraising page has been established to help cover funeral expenses.
