Moscow blackout as devastating Ukraine strike plunges Russian capital into darkness | World | News
Moscow has been plunged into darkness as Ukraine hits the Russian capital with a devastating strike, impacting over 600,000 people. According to Ukrainian reports, drone strikes have disrupted residential houses and tower blocks plunging huge swathes of the Russian capital into complete darkness.
Footage of the blackout shows street lights have also been affected with only car headlights lighting up the city on a cold and dark winters night. Posting to X, one account claiming to be monitoring the Russia Ukraine conflict posted: “Russian channels are reporting that large portions of Moscow are currently without power, amidst a large-scale drone attack currently underway against the Russian capital by Ukraine.”
Iuliia Mendel, Volodymyr Zelensky’s former press secretary, also posted online, adding: “Total blackout hits Moscow region is reported on social media: over 600,000 people plunged into darkness for more than four hours — no electricity, no mobile signal, total isolation.”
She added: ‘Drone threat declared across the oblast right now.’
While Ukraine hasn’t officially claimed responsibility for the attack, Ukrainian drones were reportedly seen heading towards the Russian capital moments earlier.
Other reports suggest that a fire at a local electricity substation may have also caused the outage, although this may have still been the result of a drone attack.
The Metro also reports that the Russian military managed to down more than 100 drones in the four days leading up to the attack, with some heading towards Moscow, something confirmed by Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin.
Moscow airport is also thought to have had to suspend flights while the drones headed into Russian airspace.
