Moment packed cruise ship of 6,000 passengers cuts out in the Med | UK | News
A cruise ship with 8,400 people aboard saw its power cut off this week in the middle of the Mediterranean. The MSC World Europa recently experienced an electrical problem with its engines, losing propulsion when the ship was eight nautical miles away from the island of Ponza.
While the ship was able to keep necessary services running during the power cut, the Coast Guard did not confirm how much time the ship lost propulsion. The ship eventually regained full power and returned to its original course. MSC notified USA Today in a statement that passengers were informed of the delay and that there were no pressing safety issues. On Tuesday, the cruise line confirmed that the ship was en route to its next port, Messina, in Sicily. One passenger said on Reddit about the incident: “There wasn’t an emergency per se, we were safe, but there was trouble with the engine (not clear what yet). It’s my first time on a cruise, and it was still ok for me, being a calm person.”
Unfortunately, technical issues on cruises aren’t entirely uncommon. Earlier this summer, a Celebrity Cruise ship lost power for under three hours off the coast when it was in Italy.
Royal Caribbean, Celebrity’s parent company, shared that the ship had undergone a technical problem when 6,400 guests and 2,000 crew members were on board.
The World Europa was launched in 2022 and is the first of MSC’s World Class ships. Each vessel is estimated to weigh over 200,000 gross tons and have more than 2,700 cabins.
The MSC World America is the second ship in the class, and the third, tentatively named MSC World Asia, is scheduled to launch in 2026.
Users took to Reddit to express their thoughts on MSC World Europa and talked about its amenities.
One Redditor wrote, “If you plan on taking advantage of the nightlife, the pub was fun, lively, and not too crowded. The other bars that were open late (and included in drink packages) had a tendency to get crowded.”
