Millions of Windows 10 users are at risk as worrying issue confirmed

Microsoft shutdown all free Windows 10 support back in October with users warned they must upgrade to Windows 11 or face an increased risk of cyber attacks and PC breaking bugs. Despite those worrying alerts it appears many simply haven’t made the jump. Data from the team at Statcounter shows over 40 perfect of the worlds PCs are still using Windows 10. Now one of the biggest laptop manufacturers has confirmed it’s still seeing huge Windows 10 adoption as well.

During a recent earnings call, Dell COO Jeffrey Clarke said, “We have about 500 million of them capable of running Windows 11 that haven’t been upgraded”.

He is referring to machines that can run Windows 11 but haven’t yet switched over to Microsoft’s latest operating system. If that wasn’t bad enough Clarke also said there are still millions that can’t upgrade.

“We have another 500 million that are four years old that can’t run Windows 11,” he added.

Of course, it’s likely that some of these PCs may well be protected by Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESUs) which offer bug fixes for a yearly fee.

“If you need more time to move to Windows 11, we recommend you enroll your Windows 10 device in ESU. You can enroll in ESU any time until the programme ends on 13 October, 2026,” Microsoft explained.

However, those who haven’t opted in for this service should definitely be on high alert.

“The October 2025 monthly security update will be the last update available,” Microsoft warned earlier this year.

“After this date, devices running these versions will no longer receive monthly security and preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats.”

It seems that these warnings may be being ignored and if you are yet to switch them now could be a good time.

The yearly CES tech show will get underway in January and Dell could be just one PC manufacturer showing off shiny new Windows 11 PCs.

Express.co.uk will be in Sin City and will bring you all the latest news – including Windows 11 updates – live as they announced.
