Mike Tyson admits he hasn’t recovered from Jake Paul boxing fight | Boxing | Sport

Boxing legend Mike Tyson has raised concerns after confessing that he hasn’t fully recovered from his November bout with Jake Paul. The 58 year old former heavyweight champion, who initially retired in 2005, shocked the boxing fraternity when he announced his return to professional boxing last year.

Tyson and Paul were originally scheduled to face off in July, but an ulcer flare-up forced Tyson to withdraw. The clash was rescheduled for November, and despite appearing fit in training, Tyson couldn’t replicate his past glory on the night of the fight.

After the second round, Tyson began to flag and struggled to land any significant blows for the remainder of the match, leading to a unanimous decision victory for Paul. The fight proved to be a massive hit on Netflix, with the streaming giant reporting that an impressive 60 million households watched the contest, which also peaked at 65 million live streams.

However, Tyson has now disclosed the physical impact of the fight, telling the New York Post: “I feel pretty good. I don’t know if I’m 100 per cent recovered, but I feel good.” In December, the seasoned boxer confessed that he had little recollection of much of the fight, admitting to Fox Sports Radio: “I don’t remember the fight that much, I kind of blanked out.”

The fighter candidly shared his recollections of the bout, saying: “I haven’t watched the fight. You know what I remember… coming back from the first round and Jake was doing some sort of bow… that’s the last thing I remember.” He continued to describe his post-fight experience: “I wasn’t tired, I wasn’t sweaty. I went to the house we were staying in, I left the house with my wife and kids, went to the after-party then went back.”

In a startling revelation, the American disclosed that he had faced a life-threatening situation prior to the fight, suffering an ulcer flare-up during a flight. Reflecting on the event, he expressed a positive outlook: “This is one of those situations when you lost but still won,” and added, “I’m grateful for [Friday] night and have no regrets about getting in the ring one last time.”

He detailed his harrowing health ordeal, stating: “I almost died in June; I had eight blood transfusions. I lost half my blood and 25lbs in hospital and had to fight to get healthy to fight so I won. To have my children see me stand toe to toe and finish eight rounds with a talented fighter half my age in front of a packed Dallas Cowboy stadium is an experience that no man has the right to ask for.”

In an unexpected encounter, Tyson ran into his former adversary at Donald Trump‘s inauguration, where it was clear there was no bad blood between them. A video posted on X – the platform formerly known as Twitter – showed Tyson climbing onto his old rival’s shoulders amidst cheers from the crowd. The 28 year old effortlessly hoisted the ex-heavyweight world champion, much to ‘Iron Mike’s’ delight. Both were impeccably dressed for the black-tie affair. ‘The Problem Child’ succinctly captioned the post with two words: “BEST FRIENDS.”
