Michael Schumacher’s heartbreaking message to wife hours before deadly Ski crash | World | News
Michael Schumacher’s heartbreaking final message to his wife Corinna shortly before his horror ski crash has been revealed. The seven-time F1 world champion said a 15-word message suggesting their next family holiday just before the accident, which left him with devastating brain injuries.
Schumacher had mentioned a trip to Dubai to go “sky diving”, after assessing the snow wasn’t “optimal” for skiing on their trip. Just hours later, Schumacher crashed while skiing off-piste, hitting his head on a rock at the Méribel resort. He was flown to nearby Grenoble, where he underwent emergency surgery and was placed in a medically induced coma.
He was released from his coma in 2014 and has been recovering at home but has not been seen in public since with little information on the F1 star’s condition released. Corinna made the revelation in the 2021 Netflix documentary ‘Schumacher’, which charted the life and legacy of the champion.
She said: “Shortly before it happened in Meribel, he said to me: ‘The snow isn’t optimal. We could fly to Dubai and go sky diving there’.
“I have never blamed God for what happened. It was just really bad luck, all the bad luck anyone can have in life. It’s always terrible when you say: ‘Why is this happening to Michael or us?’ But then why does it happen to other people?”
It’s now been 12 years since Schumacher’s horror crash which occurred just after Christmas in December 2013. At the time, Schumacher was enjoying his retirement from F1 after quitting the sport at the end of the 2012 season.
Only a few close members of Schumacher’s inner circle are granted visitation rights to the F1 legend, with details on his condition kept under wraps at his family’s request.
Ex-Ferrari F1 team bosses Jean Todt and Ross Brawn are among those understood to visit their former driver. In the Netflix film, Corinna shared a rare update on Schumacher’s day-to-day condition, admitting the star is “different”.
She explained: “Michael is here. Different, but he’s here, and that gives us strength, I find. He still shows me how strong he is every day.
“We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he’s comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond.”
