Mauricio Pochettino‘s stance on returning to Tottenham is already known, with the north Londoners on the lookout for a new manager following Thomas Frank’s exit. The former Brentford boss was relieved of his duties on Wednesday, just hours after Spurs were beaten at home by Newcastle. Despite overseeing a strong start in the Champions League, he only managed seven Premier League victories in 26 games.

That dismal run of form has left Tottenham staring at the prospect of another relegation battle following their 17th-placed finish last season. The defeat to Newcastle proved to be the final straw for Frank, who lasted only eight months following his appointment in the summer. It leaves Spurs looking for a replacement ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, with Pochettino among the names to have been linked.

The former Tottenham boss, who led the club to the Champions League final back in 2018, would be a popular appointment given his iconic status in north London.

Last month, it was reported by GiveMeSport that he would be open to returning but any move would have to wait until the summer. That is because Pochettino is committed to leading the United States into a home World Cup in June.

Just last year, the 53-year-old gave Tottenham fans hope regarding a potential comeback as he reflected on his time in charge.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “”When I left the club I always remember one interview I said I would like one day to come back to Tottenham.

“I am in the USA, so I am not going to talk about that now, but what I said then I still, after six years or five years, feel in my heart. Yes, I would like one day to come back.”

Pochettino once again hinted at a possible return to Tottenham a few days ago, claiming their recent achievements are ‘not enough’ for a club of that stature.

During an appearance on the High Performance Podcast, he said: “To win a Europa League, that the team won, is good, but it’s not enough.

“It is not enough to challenge for the Carabao Cup, or the FA Cup, or the Europa League, or the Conference League. It’s a club that should be, or needs to be because the fans, what they expect is, to be in the Champions League.

“Fighting for the Champions League, trying to believe that you can win the Champions League and also fighting for the Premier League and believing that you can win the Premier League.”

Asked to name the competition he most wants to win as a manager, Pochettino replied: “For me, the Champions League and Premier League.

“Of course the World Cup, but the Champions League and Premier League for me are things that I don’t know how, but I will touch it for sure. I don’t know which club.”
