‘Masterpiece’ new war movie that’s ‘exceptional’ – now on Amazon Prime | Films | Entertainment

A new war film sheds light on a long-forgotten battle from the 1962 India-China war. 120 Bahadur, which translates to 120 Bravehearts, tells the true story of 120 soldiers who stood their ground against overwhelming odds at the Battle of Rezang La in the freezing heights of Ladakh in northern India. Directed by Razneesh ‘Razy’ Ghai, the film stars Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar as Major Shaitan Singh Bhati, a soldier posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honour.

The war film centres on the Battle of Rezang La, fought on November 18, 1962. At over 16,000 feet in the Ladakh region, the Charlie Company of the 13 Kumaon Regiment faced an overwhelming Chinese force of approximately 3,000 troops.

Despite being vastly outnumbered and under-equipped, the 120 Indian soldiers held their ground. While only five soldiers survived the brutal encounter, their courage left a lasting imprint on Indian military history.

Farhan Akhtar’s portrayal of Major Singh captures the soldier’s determination and leadership, mirroring both the grit of battle and the emotional weight of leaving loved ones behind.

The film also shines a light on the harsh conditions faced by troops where they had to fight in freezing temperatures of −24C, heavy snowfall, and scarce winter gear, therefore showing the sheer resilience required to defend the pass.

The 1962 war, largely lost by India, resulted in significant territorial losses and thousands of casualties, lasting from October 20 to November 21. Yet the bravery displayed at Rezang La stood out as a remarkable act of heroism, remembered as one of the greatest last stands in Indian military history.

Major Shaitan Singh Bhati was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, while several other officers and soldiers of the company received decorations for their bravery.
